The latter foliation of the Moscow part was made by A. E. Viktorovn the 20th century with Arabic numerals and finishes with #172; the folio after #166 is numerated with both #167 and #168. 2 ff. 8 (-1-2-3-4-5-6) 8 ff. 7 ff. 8 (-7) 2 ff. 8 (-1-2-3-4) The quires were numerated with Glagolitic letters under titlo together with a small floral ornament in the upper right corner of the first quire folio. The markings are not preserved on the following quires: I, II, XVII. The beginning and the end of the manuscript are missing. The original f. 134 was lost and was replaced later with a 14th-century one written with Cyrillic. Now it is the sixth folio of quire XVIII. The folio after #166 is missing and the text is interrupted. Some portions of the text on ff. 1r, 33r, 88v, 168v, 171v are hardly readable due to the parchment damages. On the upper margin of f. 100 an imprint of a Glagolitic text has been noticed: for a detailed survey of manuscript damages and restorations, see Тихомиров 1962, Шмидт 1984: 54–55. Image Not preserved. There are numerous marginal notes, Glagolitic and Cyrillic; the Cyrillic marginal notes date from different periods. They include a note by a certain German (late 14th century) on f. 133v mentioning the Skete of St. Theotokos. V. Jagic 1883: 411–413 supposes that the same German wrote the text on the inserted f. 134 while Тихомиров 1962 does not share his opinion. Other notes are from different periods and they were written in cinnabar and black ink. They contain information on the days of lections, titles of the chapters, and some other liturgical notes. The Glagolitic and Cyrillic notes are published by Jagic in his edition of the Codex Marianus. 1r–133v 135r–173v anonymous Glagolitic alphabet for the main text: classical round Glagolitic script of the second half of the 10th century. Тhere many examples of writing of back jer for front one, and vice versa, and of lowering of front jer and back jer into e and o, respectively, both in roots and affixes. There are cases of missing weak jers. Following the letters for old palatal consonants, back jer is often written for the etymological front jer in weak positions, e.g. отрочиштъ, повѣждъ, мѫжъ. Four letters for nasal vowels are used. Cases of writing of оу and o for the letter for the back nasal are attested. In a few occurances, the sign for the "fifth" nasal appears: свѣтильникъ горꙙ Jn 5:35, ѣдꙙи хлѣбъ Jn 6:58, грꙙдꙙши Jn 12:12. The digraph for the front nasal is written only in word-initial position and after the letters for vowels. There are attestations of writing of и for ьі . In some cases оу is written for в in word-initial position. Following letters for old palatal consonants, the letter ю is usually written and not оу (e.g. шюица, чюетъ). The l-epentheticum is written inconsistently. The letter for [dz] everywhere is replaced by з. The continuant of the Proto-Slavic *tj is rendered more often with digraph шт. The usual reflex of *dj is жд but there are a couple of examples with з, such as розьства (48.20), and визжь (399.17). The adjective forms preffer the archaic -сц- to -ст-. Cases with -ст- are rare. The uncontracted forms of pronominal adjectives and of verbs of the -je-conjugation in Ind. Praes. Act. and of verbs in Imperfect are much more frequent than the contracted ones. Verbal forms (Ind. Praes. Act., p.3, -je-conjugation) with assimilation, such as бѣгаатъ, радоуоутъ are frequent. In Imperativus there is variation of forms with ѣ and with и, such as покажѣте 290.17, but also покажите 80.5. The manuscript uses non-sigmatic Aoristus (e.g. вьнидъ, сънидъ, идомъ, отидѫ) and first sigmatic Aoristus of verbs with stems ending in a consonant (e.g. привѣсъ, въвѣсомъ, възнѣсѧ). Verbs with infinitive stems ending in a vowel often preserve the archaic ending -тъ in Ind. Aor. Act, p. 2 and 3, Sg., e.g. обитъ, оумрѣтъ. Three cases of ommited ending -тъ for Ind. Praes. Act., p. 3. Sg. are found (e instead of естъ, нѣ for нѣстъ, and бѫде for бѫдетъ). The old suffix -нье is written frequently as -ние, e.g. знамение, but this orthography is not consistently followed. In other forms -ье is preffered (cf. абье, 24r.20). The manuscript uses lexis which is believed to be typical of the earliest Gospel translation from Greek, cf. the use of the archaic lexemes баль, жаль, миса, шюи, братръ, небесьскъ, неприѣзнь, пропѧти, иночѧдъ, врътъ, искрьнъ, грѧсти could prove this hypothesis. Also, in word-formation the manuscript prefers the old suffix - ицеѫ and not -ждьі. Still, the following forms are considered to be relatively later: благодать, написание, дрѧхлъ. The later inserted f. 134 of quire XVIII. It is written with Cyrillic letters. German Cyrillic alphabet for later notes and on the inserted f. 134. According to Jagic, the orthography is Serbian whatever it means Jagic was first to suppose that the name of the scribe is German Mt 5:23–6:16 (on the Mihanovic folia); Mt 6:17–Jo 18:13; Jo 18:30–Jo 21:17. The text is divided according to Eusebius Canon Tables and Ammonian Chapters written with Glagolitic letters on the margins. Also, thе names of the Euangelists, the titles of the chapters and the notes informing which lection on which church feast is read are written with Glagolitic letters. 1r1 – 43r18 Евангелие от Матей The Gospel according to Matthew Евангелие от Матфея The beginning is missing (up to Mt 5:23). Then these leaves became known to Fr. Miklosich who studied them in Vienna. Miklosich later gave this part of the manuscript to August Leskien. The main part of the codex was found by V. Grigorović on Mount Athos and was taken by him to Russia.
