                            <scriptNote script="Cyrs" style="uncial">The Cyrillic script of MSS NBKM 499 and NBKM 500 is similar to that
                                of the manuscripts dating from the end of the 13th and the beginning
                                of the 14th century. This writing seems to be early representative
                                of the type of script attested in the first part of the the Pirdop
                                Apostle (ff. 1–5, NBKM 497, 13th c.), Menologion BAN 72 (end of the
                                13th century), Menologion St. Peterbourg RNL, Pogod. 58 , dated
                                1339, Paraenesis of Ephrem Syrus (Rila monastery 3/7, second half of
                                the 14th century), Taktikon of Nikon of Montenegro (Rila monastery
                                1/16, second half of the 14th century). The scribe of is NBKM 499
                                and NBKM 500 is believed to have written the other four fragments
                                kept in Russian Libraries. The identification was made by Tixomirov

                                <summary xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0">The orthographic
                                    overview is based only on <emph>de visu</emph> examination of
                                    the fragments kept in NBKM (499 and 500). Unfortunately, the
                                    publication of Grigorij Il'inski <ref type="bibl" target="Ильинский 1908a">Ильинский 1908: 366–379</ref>was
                                    not available to us.</summary>
                                <langNote key="orthography" type="jers" subtype="irregular">The two letters for jers
                                    are used, in Menologion in NBKM 499 the front jer is much more
                                    frequent than in Synaxarion. In word-final position the back jer
                                    is preferred. It is preferred also following letters <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">ж, ш,
                                        щ</foreign>, while following <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">ч</foreign> both jers could be seen. There are many
                                    examples of writing of <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">е</foreign> for the front jer both in roots (e.g. <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">весъ</foreign> 9r and particularly often in root <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">-шед-</foreign>) and suffixes (e.g. <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">-енъ,
                                        -ець</foreign>) and also in G. Pl., jo-declension <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">съгрѣшенеи</foreign> 12r. Still, there are examples with
                                    jer, e.g. <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">пришълъци </foreign> 9r and the variation
                                        <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">тъмнѣмъ</foreign> (1v) <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0">темницѫ</foreign> (4r).
                                    In NBKM 499 and NBKM 500 only two instances of <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">О</foreign> for back jer is attested in suffix, e.g.
                                        <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">избьітокь</foreign> (12r) and <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">любовь</foreign> (5r), but in root and prefixes jer is
                                    preserved, e.g. <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">дъждь</foreign>. Examples with <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">О</foreign> for back jer in suffix were found by G.
                                    Il'inskij in BAN 24.4.7 (Srezn. 54) and two are quoted by<bibl xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0">
                                        <ref type="bibl" target="bib:Куев 1986">Куев 1986: 221</ref>
                                    </bibl>, viz. <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">начѧтокь, любовь</foreign>. The adversative
                                    conjunction appears both as <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">нъ</foreign> and <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">нѫ</foreign>. A case of assimilation after the fall of a
                                    week jer is attested, <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">тѧкомь</foreign> (5v). Further, the spelling <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">дьвери</foreign> is found. Following letters <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">р</foreign> and <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">л</foreign> both jers are used without a
                                    pattern.</langNote>
                                <langNote key="orthography" type="juses" subtype="nonEtymReg">Three letters for the
                                    nasal vowels are used: big jus, small jus, and rarely jotated
                                    small jus following a vowel, most often following small jus or
                                    big jus. There are several cases of writing of small jus for the
                                    big one following a vowel but this is not a strictly consistent
                                    pattern. Small jus is used after letters for the soft consonants
                                        <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">р</foreign>, <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">л</foreign>, <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">н</foreign>, <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">ч</foreign>. Following letters <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">ш</foreign>, <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">щ</foreign> the big jus is preferred, while
                                    following <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">ч</foreign> the small jus is written as a
                                    rule. Following <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">ц</foreign> both juses are attested. </langNote>
                                <langNote key="orthography" type="jotVowel">The jotated <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">ꙗ</foreign> is regularly used in word-initial position and
                                    following a vowel, while after letters <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">н</foreign>, <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">р</foreign>, <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">л</foreign>, <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">ч</foreign>, <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">ц</foreign>
                                    <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">ѣ</foreign> is written. Thus, the norm is <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">ша, чѣ,
                                        рѣ, лѣ, нѣ, цꙗ, ꙗ.</foreign>. The jotated <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">ѥ</foreign> also appears in word-initial position and after
                                    vowel, but with the same function гдⷭ҇и wide <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">є</foreign> is also used.</langNote>
                                <langNote key="orthography" type="otherLetters">The letter <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">ы</foreign> appears regularly for <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">и</foreign> in the verb <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">изити</foreign>. The scribe preserves <emph xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0">l-epentheticum</emph> in
                                    many forms but there examples without it, such as <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">вьзлюбеньіи</foreign> (1v, 2v), <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">бл<seg rend="sup">т</seg>вениемь</foreign> (2v). The scribe
                                    uses letter <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">ꙃ</foreign> in its archaic form. Wide ѻ is
                                    used mainly in word-initial position and in postvocalic one. </langNote>
                                <langNote key="orthography" type="foreignOrth">The scribe uses inconsistently izhica
                                    with two dots above in Greel loan-words and particularly
                                    following the letters for velars. Both <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">и</foreign> and <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">оу</foreign> could be found for the Greek ypsilon in Greek
                                    loans; cf. variation <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">сумона,
                                        сумеона, лоуканьскьі листрѫ. </foreign>, but regularly
                                        <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">егупетьстѣи</foreign>, <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">куринеискьі</foreign>. Both <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">еу</foreign> and <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">ев</foreign> appear in Greek loans, the latter prevailing
                                    in Menologion part. The Greek letters thita and ksi are also
                                    used in Greek loans but they are usually combined with Cyrillic
                                    letters denoting the sound with which these Greek elements are
                                    substituted in Slavic, e.g. <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">евьстѳатия</foreign>, <foreign xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" xml:lang="cu">маѯсима</foreign>. </langNote>

                                <list xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0">
                                    <item xml:id="morphology">The fragments have archaic morphology
                                        and use asigmatic Aoristus, but also some typical Middle
                                        Bulgarian features appear, such as the ending "-ie" for the
                                        Pl. of masculine nouns, e.g. <foreign xml:lang="cu">мѫжие
                                        </foreign>5v , <foreign xml:lang="cu">досадителие</foreign>
                                        10r, <foreign xml:lang="cu">свѣдѣтелие</foreign> 3v. Also in
                                        1 p. Pl. the ending "-my" appears, especially in the
                                            <emph>v.substantivum</emph>, such as <foreign xml:lang="cu">сльішахомьі</foreign> 1v, <foreign xml:lang="cu">есмьі</foreign> 3v, 5r, although the old
                                        forms are also used. Pronominal endings for adjectives are
                                        also used, even the form <foreign xml:lang="cu">творѧщоому</foreign> 12v is attested. </item>
                                    <item xml:id="lexicology">In many cases the fragments preserve
                                        the variant readings typical of the archaic Apostoloi
                                        reflecting the Cyrillo-Methodian translation. Still, in some
                                        places it has Preslavisms which are not consistently used.
                                        For instance, the manuscript uses both <foreign xml:lang="cu">постити</foreign> and <foreign xml:lang="cu">алкати</foreign>, <foreign xml:lang="cu">етеръ </foreign> and <foreign xml:lang="cu">нѣкъто</foreign>, <foreign xml:lang="cu">съньмище</foreign> and <foreign xml:lang="cu">съборъ</foreign>. The manuscript uses <foreign xml:lang="cu">диꙗволъ</foreign> Act 13: 10, 14: 38
                                        instead of <foreign xml:lang="cu">неприѣзнь</foreign> in
                                        Archaic Apostoloi, including in the Slepče Apostolos. Also
                                        it prefers <foreign xml:lang="cu">островъ</foreign>,
                                            <foreign xml:lang="cu">старѣишина жрьчьскьі</foreign>
                                        and several other Preslavisms. </item>

                    <summary>The manuscript is a full (long) Aprakos (lectionary) Apostolos,
                        beginning with the mobile cycle after Easter. Parts of the Menologion are
                        also preserved. The distribution of readings (lections) coincides with what
                        is published by C. R. Gregory for the Greek tradition <ref type="bibl" target="bib:Gregory1900">Gregory 1900</ref> The Menologion is shorter
                        than that of NBKM 882, NBKM 847 (Banica Gospel) and the Greek sources as

                    <filiation type="litRedaction">The manuscript uses archaic lexis and is
                        considered to belong to the archaic group of Apostoloi representing the
                        Cyrillo-Methodian translation; see <ref type="bibl" target="bib:Воскресенский1879">Воскресенский 1879: 111–112;</ref> . It
                        uses several Preslavisms and shares common reading with the Slepče Apostolos
                        as a full Aprakos Apostolos and more rarely with the Matica Srpska
                        Apostolos; examples for common readings with the Slepče Apostolos as opposed
                        to other archaic Apostoloi: <foreign xml:lang="cu">заповѣданое</foreign> Act
                        10: 32 vs <foreign xml:lang="cu">повелѣное </foreign> in Archaic Apostoloi;
                            <foreign xml:lang="cu">оударившоу </foreign> Act 12: 12 vs <foreign xml:lang="cu">тлькнѫвъшоу</foreign>, <foreign xml:lang="cu">алчѧщимь

                    <provenance>On 2v of BAN 24.4.7, a note by I. I. Sreznevskij informs that there
                        was there a note containing the name of priest Manuil after whom the
                        manuscript was named. On the right margin of 1r of BAN 4.5.23 (Syrku 15)
                            <persName>P. A. Syrku</persName> has left a note with pencil that this
                        fragment had been acquired from the library of a school in
                            <geogName>Plovdiv</geogName>. He also wrote with pencil
                            <geogName>"Plovdiv"</geogName> on the low margin of BAN 4.5.24 (Syrku
                        16). Further, on 1r of Grig. 15.III, <persName>V. I. Grigorović</persName>
                        wrote "С Балканов. Богоев." It has been supposed that V. I. Grigorović
                        received the fragment from <persName>A. Bogoev-Bogorov</persName> in
                            <placeName>Leipzig</placeName> in <date>1847</date>; on the history of
                        the fragments, see <ref type="bibl" target="bib:Шмидт1984">Шмидт 1984:
                            340–341.</ref>, and <ref type="bibl" target="bib:Куев1986">Куев 1986:
                            221–223.</ref>
                    </provenance>
                    <acquisition>The fragments in the collections of Syrku and Sreznevskij became
                        possession of the Library of the Academy of Sciences in St.Petersburg when
                        these collections were housed there. The fragment in the collection of
                        Grigorović as a part of this collection was housed in the State Library in
                        Moscow. Ms 499 was given to the National Library in Sofia by <name type="commisioner">A. Vǎrbanov</name>.</acquisition>
